Stockholm

It was a bit of a flying visit for my first foray into Scandinavia. We arrived late on Fiday night but were up early on Saturday to get into town for a look around. Stockholm was a very clean city (compared to filthy London anyway) and on Saturday morning the streets of the old town were practically deserted. It was a nice clear day so we strolled around the streets, the Royal Palace (which was not as impressive as it sounds), the waterfront and eventually into another island.

From here we caught a ferry to another island (there are quite a lot) and stumbled on a large open air museum containing everything from Sweedish houses from the 1840's, a match museum and a fine selection of Nordic animals.

This filled in a good portion of the day and it got dark very early. We met up with a friend of mine from school days, Alistair Wither, his girlfriend and a few friends and went out for dinner which proved to be quite entertaining when the Swedes pulled out the karaoke machine.

It took a lot of effort to get up on Sunday but we made it into town for a quick boat cruise before we caught the express train back to the airport. Stockholm was a nice clean city and it was easy to get out of the heart of the city.
